Baby Bunnies!

The Farmer and I used to raise meat rabbits years ago, but gave it up.  I had four little ones under the age of 5 and was working full time.  He was working full time and teaching through the summer and we just couldn't keep up.  So we let it go.

Then we started 4H.  And the kids saw the bunnies.  And decided we needed some.

We hadn't really gotten around to looking into rabbits.  Then our sheep guy (the sheep superintendent for fair who is also the ag teacher at the ISD) called us up and said that he had some rabbits for us - for free!

Some of his Ag kids wanted to raise a meat pen for fair, but they weren't set up at the tech center for bunnies.  And knowing that our kids were interested, he immediately thought of us.  So the deal was that we would take care of them and be able to show them.  And then we would breed them for a meat pen for us and a meat pen for the Ag kids.

So he brought them to our house and we got them set up in the garage (it's still cold and snowy here, but they will go outside in another month).  He told us which was the boy bunny and which were the girls.

Our double sided hutch didn't have a top on it yet.

Our buck rabbit, named "Grandpa" by Thing #2

The next morning, Thing #1 came in from feeding the animals and informed us that the two girls bunnies were in the same hutch.  Hmmm, strange.  So we put them back.

Later that afternoon, they were back together.  Thing #1 says, "I think Mr. Ag got the bunnies mixed up and this one is really a boy."

She's a smart girl.

Yep....bunnies were mixed up.  Oops!  Guess we were planning for baby bunnies!

Eight...count them....eight baby bunnies!

Fast forward three weeks and here they are!  Super cute babies!  They opened their eyes this week and started hopping around outside their nest.  The kids are excited to finally be able to hold them and take pictures.

These bunnies will become the show bunnies for fair.  In another month, we will re-breed the rabbits (who are now separated into boy and girl hutches with the appropriate rabbits in each!) for our meat pen rabbits.

Awww!

Thing #4 wasn't too sure....it was hoppy!

Thing #1 was home sick today...but still cuddled bunnies!
